Dope
Rick Famuyiwa has done it again, known for the popular urban movies such as The Wood and Brown Sugar. Rick created a present time of the 90’s classic movie Boyz in the Hood. Dope is not just your typical urban movie, it has action, drama and comedy that everyone can enjoy. With this movie you can definitely tell Director/Writer Famuyiwa was trying to send a message to the urban community.
In the film Dope starring Shameik Moore as Malcolm and his two friends Tony Revolori as Jib and Kiersey Clemons as Diggy. Weren’t just your average group of geeks, beside focusing on their studies, they enjoy listening to 90’s hip-hop music and played in their own punk band. Within the mist of running away from a gang group name the bloods. Malcolm and his friends encounter a drug dealer by the name of Dom (A$AP Rocky) that wanted Malcolm to do him a favor. Malcolm was then presented with an invitation to a birthday party. When Malcolm, Jib and Diggy were at the party, the scene became violent. After Malcolm fled the scene, he didn’t realize that he had a load of drugs in his backpack. Unsure of what the package contain, Malcolm and his friends took matters into their own hands. Putting their college future in jeopardy, Malcolm, jib and Diggy decided to sell, what’s in the bag.
Figuring out ways to sell this drug Malcolm meets the beautiful lily (Chanel Iman) and she ends up taking some of his drugs. This then gave Malcolm the idea of naming the drug after her, sending Malcolm, Jib and Diggy on a wild adventure of violence, drugs, and thugs.
With all the unexpected twist and turn of events that occur. Malcolm prove to himself and friends that he has lots of guts and wits in this movie. You can definitely tell there is a lesson to be learned from all this. Sending out a positive message is what Rick Famuyiwa was aiming for his viewers. On a scale from 1-10 I will give dope an 8.5 it’s unique, funny and not like any other 90’s urban movie.
