With New York Fashion Week in full swing in the city that never sleeps, this year’s fashion extravaganza marked the first time in New York fashion history where plus-size fashion designers had a platform to showcase their collections. Seeing the need for such a historic moment, Manik Mag executive editors, Selina Weekes and Brandee Joyner spearheaded efforts for a series of fashion presentations highlighting positive body image. Dubbed New York Fashion Week Plus, these events took place from September 9th – September 13th and easily became some of the busiest and most anticipated events of the season.
What went on behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week Plus was nothing short of magical
The Manik Mag editors and staff made it their mission to make sure each model not only looked flawless, but also achieved looks that screamed confidence, grace, and extravagance. Doing so consisted of executing a unique fashion presentation day after day at a different Manhattan location. On the last day of the series, Manik Mag was also able to pull off an incredible pop up shop for NYFW Plus attendees.
Partnering with eight plus-size fashion designers and creators who are international sensations, reality stars, and celebrity designers, Selina and Brandi captivated audiences with an aspect of fashion art that is oftentimes ignored. While the more curvaceous woman realistically makes up a higher percentage of the retail market, that body type is seldom marketed to. Hoping to influence and ultimately change the narrative around plus-size fashion, Manik Mag and New York Fashion Week have curated a presentation that is sure to turn heads and take the NYFW franchise by storm.
For those who may not know, Manik Mag is a hub for everything fashion, beauty, health and pop culture focused on the modern and very chic curvaceous woman. It is the result of combining the world of a high fashion magazine with that of a tech savvy website which make them a force to be reckoned with. So it is no surprise that they would be the ones to pave new paths in plus size fashion.
