“A slut is someone, usually a woman, who’s stepped outside of the very narrow lane that good girls are supposed to stay within. Sluts are loud. We’re messy. We don’t behave. In fact, the original definition of ‘slut’ meant ‘untidy woman.’ But since we live in a world that relies on women to be tidy in all ways, to be quiet and obedient and agreeable and available (but never aggressive), those of us who color outside of the lines get called sluts. And that word is meant to keep us in line.” —Jaclyn Friedman
The voluptuous and lovely Amber Rose is this week’s #WCW. This Philly girl got her start as a dancer/stripper and caught the eye of the controversial Kanye West after he saw her in Ludacris’s video ‘What Them Girls Like’. She got the attention of the world when she posed nude in a Louis Vuitton print advertisement for Kanye’s sneaker line. Her relationship with West lasted from 2008-2010. Then, as society would tell it, Amber jumps to her next relationship with rapper Wiz Khalifa. Let the “Slut Shaming” begin! Amber Rose, despite marrying and becoming a mother with Wiz Khalifa, has been quick to be called a slut or a thot. It seem society says if you are “woman who steps outside of the very narrow lane that good girls are supposed to stay within” it deems you a slut. So, this past week it was very appropriate that the organizer now activists Amber Rose lead a “Slut Walk” through Downtown L.A.
Slut Walks have become an international movement. In the words of Sonya Barnett, the protest illustrate “that victim-blaming, slut-shaming, and sexual profiling are never acceptable.[…] The idea that a slut is a lesser person and deserving of sexual assault isn’t exclusive to the police. Media also has to get behind this idea.” The spark that set it off started in Ontario, Toronto after remarks from Toronto Police Michael Sanguinetti that spoke out of turn about the issue of campus rape at a York University safety forum at Osgoode Hall Law School. Officer Sanguinetti said: “I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this… however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.”
For this we salute Amber Rose and women everywhere and their right not to be blamed, shamed, or profiled for their beauty!
