This week we’re recognizing Viola Davis as our #WCW for making history as the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In her acceptance speech she highlighted the lack of roles for women of color, thanking those that are redefining what it means “to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be Black!”
She won her first Tony Award for King Hedley II, in 2001, and was nominated for an Oscars in 2008 and 2011 for her roles in “Doubt” and “The Help” respectively. She is currently starring in the ABC hit television show “How to Get Away with Murder” where her role as Annalise Keating earned this historic win.
