BET Awards 2015 Fashion & Style Watch
With the 15th annual BET Awards fast approaching everyone was abuzz; who’s performing, who’s coming with who, and of course….will Beyonce be there? Very important questions that we needed the answers to. Mostly I watch for the few performers I know (someone new is always popping up on the scene faster than I can remember them), the Centric awards and most importantly the fashion. I can honestly say that I was impressed with this year’s red carpet attendees. Either the stylist union was given a stern talking to or people actually care about what they wear these days, because I was hard pressed to find a look I didn’t like (though I found a few). I was looking for a “WOW” factor, something to really catch my attention. And Ms. Kelly Rowland did NOT disappoint in her Givenchy all black dress with full mini skirt and the OSTRICH feather sleeves. Yes, I said ostrich and can I tell you I LIVED!! Ciara was another fav, I thought the beaded sleek shift dress by Wes Gordon with plunging neckline was exquisite and not over done. Plus you don’t need to do much when you have Russell Westbrook to hold on to. My girl Zendaya is right up there with Rihanna, she can wear pretty much anything and she makes “it” look amazing. Which is true for the Nicholas Jebran glittery pink mini shirt dress she wore complimented by the Roberto Cavalli platform heels. And that hair! Loved it.
Karruche Tran made everyone’s head turn, including Chris Brown‘s, with her Michael Costello printed sequin pants suit paired perfectly with the La Perla mesh sheer bra. I know Chris was kicking himself. It seemed pant suits were a theme on the red carpet, especially since feminine tailored suits are a major trend this season. Black Chyna and Amber Rose arrived together, dressed just alike in an all white pant suit with matching white cropped bustier. Um…no. I get that they did it all to support the recent Supreme Court ruling on same sex marriage but you did NOT have to arrive dressed like the Bobbsy Twins. Not at all. Lil Mama also tried her hand at the feminine suiting, with an all black Viktor and Rolf tuxedo style number with sequin embellishments. I wanted to love it, really, but it just didn’t fit her well and the open jacket with no shirt wasn’t as flattering as she probably hoped. But I did love her makeup. I also really wanted to love LaLa Anthony’s printed cross halter Peter Pilotto mini, but I don’t know what it was but I just couldn’t. My favorite part of her look were those citrine Giuseppe Zanotti sandals.
Everyone who knows me, knows I love me some Draya Michelle and my baby never disappoints. The simplistic navy blue jumpsuit by Galvon London fit her to perfection and had just a touch of sexy with the slight plunging neckline. She kept it simple with natural makeup and classic waves, a perfect touch.Actress Naturi Naughton showed her support of student/designer Kyemah McEntrye by wearing one of her colorful African inspired dresses complete with the perfect mermaid hem. Naturi took it further by wearing her hair in braids, I thought it was a great touch and really took it back to our roots. My least favorite outfits were very few but some I was super disappointed with. I’m not sure if Diddy was too busy with his BadBoy Reunion to dress Cassie but that all black mini dress looked like an uber expensive version of something from an IG boutique. Not impressed. Veronika Bozeman from Empire, arrived with Tyrese. They had this whole black and white ensemble thing going on. Tyrese nailed it. Veronika looked cheap and tacky, I don’t know who designed it but it just didn’t look good on her. At all. Monica wore a Stephane Rolland all white flowing gown with embellished sleeves. I loved the look she was going for, but I thought there was way to much fabric for her frame so it didn’t fit her as well as I would have liked.
As for the men, you had a mixture of cleaned up casual and suited to perfection, with a whole lot in between. This is one of the things that irritates me about the BET Awards. While one person will arrive in a well tailored suit or beautiful designer gown, the next person strolling up the red carpet might have on jeans, a tee and sneakers. SNEAKERS… on the red carpet? Really? Bobby Valentino took metro-sexual to a whole other level with his gold and white outfit, there was too much V-cut tee and overly tight pants for my liking. On the other hand I loved Charlie Wilson‘s metallic brocade dinner jacket, though the matching subtle gold pants could have been saved for another time. Big Sean is a simple guy but he gave us understated with a twist of polish. The all black double breasted jacket and matching pants were well tailored and suited him perfectly. And he added his usual casual touch with a slim fitting white tee. The legendary Smokey Robinson showed us why a man in a well tailored suit can cut such an impressive figure. Smokey arrived in a metallic cerulean blue suit paired with a tie of a similar shade and a crisp white shirt. I’m sure it made his eyes really pop. Fonzworth Bentley arrived in a suit very similar in shade to Mr. Robinson’s but he upped the ante by pairing it with some stylish burgundy loafers and an open front shirt, sans tie. Michael B. Jordan and Diggy Simmons both impressed me with their “50 shades of gray” suiting. Michael wore an immaculate suit of slate gray that verged on a deep, deep green but fit him like a glove and was paired with a dark colored shirt. Loved it! Diggy went a bit lighter, his patterned suit jacket was paired very nicely with a lighter gray pant and matching shoes of the same tone. Rapper Fabulous was the only casual ensemble I really liked, in head to toe Givenchy, he blew me away by keeping everything on the simpler side and the addition of the pork pie hat was a great touch. Over all I think this was the best dressed red carpet of the BET Awards in a long while. Everyone for the most part arrived dressed to the nines. We’ll see what happens next year!
