First, let me just say….I am so here for Missy Elliot and this “comeback.” To say she left would be false, she just hasn’t put out her own body of work recently but Missy has collaborated with other artists through the years. Always giving us a banger, because lets face it, she knows how to make dope music. I think we all have to agree that she looks amazing for one and two, she is definitely the same Missy from the “Hot Boyz” days, just tightened up.
I loved this video! It made me feel like I was back in middle school, hanging out with my girl friends while we all try to “work it”. It definitely brought back all the great memories of listening to a Missy song and wanting to do nothing but dance and have a good time. And what was even better, was the fact that she has not changed what made us love her way back when. Don’t get me wrong, the song definitely incorporates relevant pop culture references ( did you see homie doing a handstand on the hover board or nah? ) but it’s still the Missy Elliot we knew and loved. In my opinion, this is how you stay relevant to the current audience but remain true to your aesthetic as an artist. Especially when that aesthetic is what you’re known for and made us fans in the first place. No overly sexualized dances or looks, which was never her style to begin with. The lyrics were dope and she incorporated her dancers in awesome choreographed visuals as per a usual Missy Elliot video.
Its almost like her style transcends time, I really felt like it was 2000 all over again. If we’re being honest, Missy implied a “futuristic” feel into a lot of her videos and she was definitely on to something then and now. I mean, c’mon! That reflective sweat suit with the bedazzled lips and the two sided pop art look!! Totally Missy at her finest. I also thought the marionette dolls were a great idea. I can’t tell you why I loved seeing a doll-like Pharrell playing makeshift drums so much but it was awesome. I was waiting for a synchronized dance sequence at the end with all the people in the boxes but whatever, I’ll take what I can get. Either way I cannot wait to see what else is in store for us. If this video was any indication, this might be an album we can listen to from start to finish. Welcome back Missy! I think I can speak for all of us when I say, we missed you.
